Abstract:

Photographs documenting various aspects of the forced evacuation of Japanese Americans during World War II. California locations include Los Angeles County (Little Tokyo, a train station, and Santa Anita reception center), San Francisco, San Benito County, San Juan Bautista, and the relocation centers at Manzanar and Tule Lake. Also includes a view taken at a camp in Shelley, Idaho. Oversize print: scene of Nakai family at Manzanar taken by Ansel Adams (shelved in AX).

While employed for the photography division of the U.S. Office of War Information, Russell Lee documented the forced evacuation of Japanese Americans from their homes and places of employment between April and August of 1942.
